Platforms/Versions

Color Finesse 2.1.5 or later on Macintosh OS X and Colorociter CS-1 Colorists Control Surface with Ethernet interface.

Problem

In order for Color Finesse to communicate with the Colorociter control surface both must be properly configured with matching network settings.

Solution

Start by configuring the Colorociter for your network settings. You will need to know the IP address to be used by the Colorociter as well as the subnet mask. The Colorociter does not support DHCP so you must manually assign it a fixed IP address.

If you have a network administrator they will be able to supply you with the required information. If you do not have an administrator you will need to determine your current network settings and assign a new IP address to the Colorociter. Once you have the subnet mask and IP address you can configure the Colorociter.

Turn on the power to the Colorociter and wait for the initialization sequence to end. When you see the text Synthetic Aperture Colorociter” in the display, enter configuration mode by simultaneously pressing both the Page 4 and the Reset buttons on the Colorociter. You should now see a display that looks like this: Colorociter Main DisplayNow press Page 6 to set the subnet mask address. You will see a display like this: Colorociter Subnet Mask DisplayUsing the knobs below the display, set the proper subnet mask for your network. Rotating the knobs very quickly is not the right approach when making large changes in the address fields. Instead, rotating the knobs at a slow but steady rate will adjust the numbers most quickly.

Once you have set the desired subnet mask, press the Reset button to save your settings.

Now set the IP address by entering configuration mode again by simultaneously pressing both the Page 4 and the Reset buttons on the Colorociter. Then press Page 7 to enter IP setup mode where you’ll see a display like this: Colorociter IP Address DisplayAdjust the IP address using the four knobs on the left. Verify that the port is set to 23, which is the default and is the most commonly used port. (If you need to use a different port for network security reasons, see the Knowledge Base article Configuring Color Finesse and the Colorociter for Alternate Ethernet Ports.)

Once you have set the desired IP address and port, press the Reset button to save your settings.

To ensure that the settings are active in the Colorociter after they have been changed, perform a hard reset by turning off the power to the Colorociter, counting to five, and turning the power back on.

That completes the configuration of the Colorociter. You must now configure Color Finesse to have matching settings.

Start the Color Finesse user interface and select Preferences from the application menu. Select the Control Surface tab and you’ll see a pane which looks like this:Colorociter Preferences PaneEnter the IP address you set into the Colorociter in the Control Surface IP Address field. Verify that the Control Surface Type is set to Standalone Colorociter, and that the Control Surface Interface Type is set to Ethernet. When everything is set correctly, click OK.

To test the Colorociter, quit from the Color Finesse user interface. If you are using the plug-in version of Color Finesse, select Quit from the File menu rather than clicking OK as you normally would.

Restart the Color Finesse user interface and the Colorociter should be initialized and be ready to use.

If Color Finesse is unable to communicate with the Colorociter for some reason, there may be a delay of 2-3 minutes while the connection attempt times out. (This lengthy "hang" is imposed by the operating system, not Color Finesse.) For tips on troubleshooting a communications problem, see the Knowledge Base article Colorociter CS-1 with Ethernet Interface is Not Responding.
